A Slice

A smile is layered across the horizon
In response to the promised day; a confection
Of goodness atop the earths crust.

The heat of day moves in circular strokes
Leavening the surface in preparation
For the moment; each ring a step;

A walk in pursuit of a purpose unknown.
Even the trees cannot be assured of the height
That is needed to reach their full potential.

Coda:

A galaxy of halos ring,
Resounding in triumph,
Each movement a designation
Without end; completeā€¦ stillā€¦

Mer: Thank you for the perception. I would like to hear a little more about the "lines and circles in side us." I've not thought of it before. Hmmm.

Well, the idea of the nerves being exposed is very conducive to a sense I have of myself of never wanting to miss anything. With ones nerves exposed and left to the fiat (?) of nature we are always feeling life as it is handed to us. I'm a restless sort so the idea of feeling everything all the time excites me. It's my idea of being alive. It's breathtaking!

What I especially like, and I'm in the process of trying to come to understand it better in a poem I'm attempting to write, is the interplay of light as a source of energy that effects the open nerve network metaphor as well. And that is something that has had a profound effect on much of what I feel on a very personal and romantic level.

Thanks again for your comments mer.

I should have mentioned that the interest in how "light" functions in my interior life has come about from a very wonderful personal experience that has been incrediibly inspiring. It is related very directly to my muse! A very silent muse.

I think lines 8-9 are genuinely profound.

Thanks Richard. Like so many of my attempts at poetry, occasionaly there are little moments in a line that show that "potential" is an ongoing phenomenon. After all, that is what the word actually says, doesn't it?

As always you bring light to words. Greatly appreciated hermano.

There is a new abstractness, and a deeper complexity, in this poem, which isn't yeilding itself to me as easily as your other poems do. But walking is like that, and I walk a lot, the body, 'each ring a step,' and the reflections on life and the universe and each moment, all encompassed, from the self to a 'galaxy of halos ring.' And I agree fully with mer...
